Oregon'S Basketball Court Is Hard To Win On, But Also Hard To Understand
For those who don't know (and maybe don't even care) the reference, it must be an eerie sight, accompanied by the words: "deep in the woods" (no apologies to Stephen Sondheim). So, I'll let Tinker Hatfield, the man who designed the court, say it in his own words: "We wanted to design the most iconic television presence possible for the University of Oregon by evoking a basketball floor design very unique and noticeable. .” So okay. According to the University of Nike, "The ground is framed by a representation of a view from below a forest of fir trees." It's pretty cool. Now that we have established what this graphical representation is, the next logical question is "why is it on the ground?" Once again, according to Tinker Hatfield, "It's inspired by our beautiful tree-covered area and the UO 1939 NCAA Championship basketball team nicknamed the 'Tall Firs'. Of course it is. If you look the ground, you will notice that it is called "Kilkenny Floor". And who is Kilkenny? They are, according to Oregon, designed "to honor Pat Kilkenny and the Kilkenny family, telling their story in a series elegant and sober with three symbolic graphics".If you look closely, you might be able to make out the following: “Chart 1 (left side) depicts Morrow and Heppner County, Oregon, where Pat Kilkenny grew up. If you look closely at the "pi-A-pi" graphic, it's the logo of Matt Knight, after whom the building is named. If the name "Knight" rings a bell, it's because the building is named after Phil Knight's son, Matthew, who was tragically killed in a scuba diving accident at the age of 34. Finally, there's the "Deep In The Woods" slogan on the court, which is meant to intimidate opponents (no, really).
